Scene 1 : An Empty Stable at The Stop Inn

Leah discovers that the animals have escaped … again. It’s all Joel’s fault of course, he’s always forgetting to close the stable door. The children get ready to round up the escaped animals.

Scene 2 : Donkeys Galore

Dinah the donkey has wandered along the Nazareth road and meets another donkey coming the other way .. with a young couple called Mary and Joseph.

Scene 3 : Of Camels, Cows and Kings

As the kings sleep, Camilla the cow wanders into the camp. There is some aggravation between her and the camels about their differences, but eventually they decide to be friends.

Scene 4 : Wings and Things

The angels appear to the shepherds, and the escaped chickens and goats spot them too. The chickens are impressed by the angels’ flying abilities.

Scene 5 : A Full Stable

Leah and Joel have rounded up the livestock. The stable is jam packed with all the animals, Mr and Mrs Shameel, the kings, the shepherds, Mary and Joseph and of course a very special baby called Jesus.

Mr Sh              We can’t be worrying about stable animals when the inn is full of guests for the census. Come on Mrs Shameel, jobs to be done.

(Mrs Shameel picks up her washing basket and exits following Mr Shameel)

Leah                Come on Joel. Leave that silly dog here.

Joel                 Scruff isn’t a silly dog he can talk. Scruff, tell Leah what’s on top of a house.

Scruff              (Barking) Roof, roof.

Joel                 What’s the opposite of smooth?

Scruff              (Barking) Rough, rough.

Joel                 What was the billy goat called in that fairy story?

Scruff              (Growl and bark) Grrrrruff, grrrruff.

Leah                (Sarcastically) Oh very impressive. He’s obviously got more brains than you Joel.

Come on, let’s round up the animals. (All exit)

(Ronnie rat cautiously peeps around the open stable door to see if the coast is clear. He slowly emerges carrying a large suitcase with the word DESERTING written in large letters visible to the audience. He turns back to the stable and beckons to the others inside the stable. Rita emerges, carrying suitcase and beckons to the little rats to follow)

Ronnie Rat       Come on Rita the coast is clear again.

Rita Rat           Ok Ronnie we’re ready. Come on children.

(They all scurry across the stage in a line and exit)

Narr 1              Oh dear! Even the rats are deserting the sinking ship.

Narr 2              (Looking at Narr 1) Wrong play Narrator One! This is about an EMPTY STABLE in

     BETHLEHEM……… NOT the ship TITANIC.

Narr 3              The stable really is empty now, not even the rats want to stay.

Narr 4              Let’s hope Leah and Joel bring the animals back soon.

Narr 5              They will find it hard to round up the animals in the hustle and bustle of Bethlehem.

Narr 6              Especially as Bethlehem is full of people from all over the country coming to be counted for the census. Look, here come some weary travellers now.

Announcer Scene Two : Donkeys Galore

(Enter Mary and Joseph who walk slowly and wearily around the stage leading their donkey which is laden with luggage. They stop centre stage)

Mary                Oh Joseph, are we nearly at Bethlehem?

Joseph             Not much further Mary. You’ll soon be able to rest.

Mary                Poor donkey needs a rest too.

Danny              (Wearily) Eee-aw! Eee-aw!

(Off stage Dinah donkey answers with a bright and happy Eee-aw)
