Scene 1 : The census office in Bethlehem
Census officials are getting ready to count the people arriving in Bethlehem. Sums are really hard you know … especially for this lot!
Scene 2 : The Road to Bethlehem
One of the census counters meets Mary and Joseph on the road. He is not sure whether or not to include Mary’s “bump” … and the donkey certainly doesn’t count … or does it?
Scene 3 : Kings From the Orient
Easy peasy … three kings and three scratty camels.
Scene 4 : Outside a Bethlehem Inn
As it said in the first song, the census had not been very well planned. There is no room at the inn for Mary and Joseph.
Scene 5 : Inside that very same Bethlehem inn
Cook and helpers are trying to make a figgy cake for the guests. So that’s one egg, two cups of flour .. oh, you know the recipe .. but don’t forget the figs! (Now how many was it?)
Scene 6 : On that very same hill overlooking Bethlehem
Quite a few shepherds and LOADS of angels to be counted .. too many in fact!
Scene 7 : A stable in Bethlehem
A stable in Bethlehem.
During the song Mary and Joseph travel around the stage.
As the song ends they exit, and the three kings enter with their camels.
Announcer Scene three. Kings from the orient.
(The kings deliver their lines strongly)
King 1 We three kings of orient are …
King 2 … bearing gifts we travel so far.
King 3 Field and fountain, moor and mountain …
All … following yonder star. (All simultaneously point heavenward).
King 1 (To king 3) Hang on, I don’t remember any fountain.
King 2 (To king 3) Three kings in a fountain? Doesn’t sound right.
King 3 ` Well we went through all the rest … and some deserts.
King 1 I think we must be near by now anyway. (CT 2 enters)
CT 2 Good day your majesties. (He bows).
I wonder if I might count you for the census please?
King 2 (Strongly) We three kings of orient are …
King 3 Oh don’t start that again.
CT 2 (He writes) So that’s three kings and three scratty camels then.
(The offended camels stand with hands on hips)
Thank you very much. Have a nice day. (He exits)
SONG 4 : FROM THE ORIENT
During the song the Kings lead their camels around the stage, showing gifts as they are
Mentioned.
Announcer Scene four. Outside a Bethlehem inn.
(Mary and Joseph enter and knock on the door of the inn. The innkeeper appears).
Joseph Hello there. My wife and I would like a room for the night please.
IK Oooh, tricky one there matey. All the rooms are long gone.
(The innkeeper’s wife appears)
It all adds up to the very first Christmas and a great production for your school.
It all adds up to the very first Christmas and a great production for your school. A host of angels, enough cooks to spoil the broth, (or figgy cake as it happens), four shepherds, three kings, two parents and one baby boy to be counted.
