During the song the toys come to life as the lyrics suggest. They yawn and stretch slowly as they ‘wake up’. This part of the musical lends itself to dance and movement. The song may be repeated if the children need more time to perform the actions of the toys.

Clown              I’m alive, I can jump and spin around! [Actions]

Doll                 I’m alive too. I can dance … look. [ Dancing ]

Spaceman        I can walk and hop on the moon! [ Actions]

Depending on how many children you have, you might like to include other toys here.

Tinsel              Toys, would you like to help me decorate this lonely little Christmas tree?

Toys                Yes please.

Sandy Squirrel enters

Sandy              Hey, can I help decorate the tree as well?

Tinsel              Yes Sandy Squirrel, but what can you do?

SONG 4 : HELPING OUT

Sandy Squirrel mimes throughout the song

Narrator 3        Tinsel didn’t need nuts, or holes, or leaves sweeping ….

but she did need a good climber.

Sandy              I’ll go and get climbing for you Tinsel.

[ Sandy acts out the following narration instructions which should be spaced to fit his movements ]

Narrator 3        So Sandy Squirrel set to work collecting berries and cones from the big bushes and the tall trees.

Narrator 4        He painted the cones silver to make them pretty.

Narrator 5        He hung the bright red berries and the silver cones on the tree.

The play takes place mainly in a garden, but an area to the side of the stage/platform represents the inside of the house.

Children dressed as toys, dolls, clowns, spacemen, teddy bears etc. are arranged in this area. Behind them, if possible, the scenery needs to suggest a cosy room with Christmas decorations and a Christmas tree.

A bare fir tree is set centre stage.

The narrators are dressed in coats, hats and scarves. In turn they come on stage, circle the central fir tree looking carefully at it. As they deliver their lines they point to the fir tree and address the audience.

The Frosties try to guess Tinsel's name. They help her to decorate the Christmas tree.

Tinsel brings the toys to life so that they can help with the decorations too.

The squirrels ask if they can help, and Tinsel asks them to collect bright berries and fir cones for the tree.

Clown asks what Christmas is all about. Tinsel tells them that baby Jesus was born at Christmas. You may extend the nativity content of the musical at this stage, or go straight on to the song "It's All About a Baby".

The tree looks lovely when it is finished.
